Jockey Noel Callow wasted no time to returning to the winners’ circle at Geelong after recovering from a leg injury which sidelined him for more than three weeks.
Callow, who had seven rides at Friday’s meeting, hadn’t ridden since suffering severe bruising when his right leg was crushed in the barrier when was aboard the then unraced L’Esprit at Werribee on April 19.
The multiple Group One winning jockey gave his leg a good test when he had to use all his vigour to boot home Greystone ($8) by three quarters of a length from $1.90 favourite Resetalenko in the Briseis Club 3YO Maiden Plate (1200m).
“It is great to be back,” said Callow who went to America for a week to celebrate his mother’s 70th birthday in Las Vegas while recuperating from his injury.
“My leg still isn’t completely right but it is good enough to ride.”
Despite being in high demand for the Geelong meeting, Callow’s only mount at Caulfield on Saturday is the Mick Kent-trained Philda who is $51 with TAB Sportsbet in the Manfred Phillips Handicap (1100m).
Philda disappointed first up when he finished 10th to Second Effort in the Listed Wangoom Handicap (1200m) at Warrnambool.
Callow is in for a busier day at Cranbourne on Sunday where he has seven rides while he has another five rides at Kyneton on Monday.
